Saw My Fair Lady at the Shaw festival today. SO FUCKING GOOD, I DON'T THINK YOU UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS PLAY. Weirdly steampunk-y design, but um it would be hypocritical of me to complain about that and anyway the play itself is Edwardian so it wasn't noticeably off-base. They avoided comparisons to the film in the Ascot sequence by going for bold, almost neon colours instead of the stark black and whites, which was a neat departure.

There was something just different enough about the way he played Higgins that they managed to almost sell me on the stupid ending. It didn't feel like I was necessarily supposed to think of it as a romance, which helped. But just-- I actually bought that he was in love with her and just terrible at interacting with humans in general and women in particular, instead of my usual reading Higgins as homoromantic ace and the ending as fucking stupid. It will I think always be jarring to hear that part sung properly as opposed to spoken-on-key, though.

I'M JUST SO HAPPY I GOT TO SEE THIS SHOW. I've written two papers on it, you know. And never seen it live until now. Actual best birthday present!
