Tim Burton Marathon/Retrospective, Day Three

So uh maybe a movie where the main antagonist is an evil disabled former circus freak who got abandoned by his parents was not the best thing for me to be watching today, you guys! Maybe. Y'know, except for the whole "Kill all the babies" thing? The Penguin is a more sympathetic character than Batman. Well, except for the sexual harassment, which: Creepy!

This is the first movie I remember seeing in theatres, ever. Explains a lot, doesn't it? I've been programmed to like Tim Burton and Batman and ladies in tight black leather since I was, like, two. I never really liked Selina much in the comics/cartoons, because Michelle Pfeiffer's version of her is just such an adorable freak and she and Michael Keaton's Bruce are simultaneously perfect for each other and the worst idea ever. (I love Michael Keaton's Dazed Bruce Wayne Face, it is excellent.)

I FUCKING LOVE THIS MOVIE.

The villain is A BURLAP SACK FULL OF INSECTS THAT THINKS HE IS CAB CALLOWAY. There is nothing about this that is not AMAZING, okay.

Jack and Sally deserve each other, he is kind of useless at making any kind of sane decisions and she is kind of useless at having charisma and social skills, together they are one functioning person. Well, okay, one functioning...Skeleton/living doll hybrid? Whatever.

I am so glad they never did make sequels where Jack visits other holidays. Although a non-American-Christian-centric one would be kind of nice! (Jack invades Pesach and everybody is forced to eat Matzo for a week 'til Sally brings him to his senses! I WOULD WATCH THE SHIT OUT OF THAT MOVIE.)

This movie is just. Gah. A fucking triumph of animation. Stop-motion features... You just didn't do that. Animated movies about ghosts and monsters? Christmas movies about ghosts and monsters? Yeah. There is a reason it had such a shitty box-office take, but there is also a reason DVD and merch sales are ridiculously high. It strikes a nerve with a lot of people! I know I have a tendency to be bitchy at people who are Nightmare fans and think that makes them Burton Experts, I judge people so hard when they say this is their favourite movie? But I need to stop that, because fuck, it's my favourite too.

Tomorrow: Ed Wood and Mars Attacks! Fuck yeah, underrated '90s movies.
