I went full-on self indulgent with my nominations this year. Bear with me, this post could get long.

General: I get migraines, so please try to avoid split-second flashing cuts. I prefer vids with lyrics, in English or in French, but whatever music genre speaks to you is awesome!

1988 Olympics Figure Skating RPF

It's an Olympic year this winter, which means tensions in figure skating fandom are heightened and if you're a long-time fan you probably just want to retreat into safe comfortable past events where you don't have to worry about a) who will win and b) who will seriously injure themselves. Or maybe this is just me.

I've been watching figure skating my whole life, and in the early 1990s the 1988 competitors were already legends. And what an exciting event it must have been for people alive to watch it! Epic rivalries in the Men's and Women's event, people pushing the technical boundaries of the sport in all four disciplines, the Cold War undercurrent to any international competition of the era... I'm pretty sure I was joking when I first started tagging tumblr posts "#primary fandom: the 1988 olympics" but it's... Not really a joke.

Some potential avenues a vid could take:
Team Canada vid! I love every one of the Canadian skaters from this era very much.
A 1980s equivalent to my Fight Song from last year, ft. the top five or six ladies
A focus on the Battle of the Brians, although not too triumphant please, I'm Canadian
Corner Gas:

The Great Canadian Sitcom, Corner Gas is set in the fictional town of Dog River, Saskatchewan, and ran for the archetypical six seasons and a movie. It's probably my favourite TV show ever, certainly my favourite relatively long-running show. Some of the jokes (episodes about hockey or curling, guest appearances by the Tragically Hip or by the CTV News crew) are particularly Canadian but I think in general the show should have a fairly universal appeal. My favourite characters are ambiguously-gay-coded First Nations police chief Davis, sardonic genius gas station attendant Wanda, and wacky elderly curmudgeon Oscar, but if you want to do an ensemble vid or one focused on different characters feel free! The whole cast is extremely funny and they're all dear to my heart.

I know the movie made Brent/Lacey canon but I really don't ship them so please disregard that in your vid. Using other elements from the movie is okay.

House on Haunted Hill:

Millionaire Fredrick Loren (Vincent Price) offers a group of strangers ten thousand dollars if they survive spending the night with him in a rented haunted mansion; mayhem and murder ensue. Obviously, if you're here, you're here for Vincent Price, but the rest of the cast more than holds their own, most notably Carol Ohmart as Loren's wife Annabelle and Carol Craig as the hysterical Nora. The writing is inconsistent and confusing, but the performances and the cinematography make up for it. Any direction you want to take when vidding this fandom is great, especially if you can include the skeleton.

It Came From Beneath The Sea:

This is a film I came to for the Ray Harryhausen octopus, without any other expectations, and unexpectedly found myself falling in love with the human characters. Or specifically with one human character. Dr. Leslie Joyce is far from the screaming damsel in distress you would expect to find in a 1950s monster movie. She's an acclaimed marine biologist, noted by other characters to be the greatest living expert in her field. Her love interest in the film is a Navy man who tries his usual Action Hero Gets The Girl By Being So Tough schtick on her and she is not having any of it and I'm very charmed.

I would love a vid just about Dr. Joyce, or a Dr. Joyce/Pete/Dr. Carter OT3 vid, with or without an appearance by our friend the Ray Harryhausen octopus.

Space Battle Lunchtime:

Two-volume graphic novel series by Natalie Riess, published by Oni press.

The adventures and misadventures of the first human contestant on alien masterchef. Even if you aren't interested in vidding this source, I highly recommend you read it because it's fairly short and super cute. As an adult, I very rarely read middle-grade books and wish I had had them as a kid, but in this case I definitely wish I could hand it to myself at age ten or so. Reads like if Douglas Adams wrote a shoujo manga with canon space lesbians. I cannot oversell how much fun this series is, or how charming Riess's art is!

Crimson Peak:

Like if Roger Corman's Poe films had a lot more time, money, and attention to detail. Critics tried to judge Crimson Peak by the standards of a horror movie and they're right that it's not a good horror movie but it is an incredible gothic romance. I've never felt more like the exact target audience for a film than I did for Crimson Peak. It is an absolute crime that neither Kate Hawley (costume design) or Tom Sanders (production design) got an Oscar nod for their work here; any vid that showcases their wonderful design work would be lovely.

I would love a vid that focuses primarily on Edith and her journey. Edith/Lucille (constructed reality or otherwise; no need to try and make their relationship healthier happier or more functional than canon) also extremely welcome!

Kindred Spirits:

My household recently got cable tv for the first time in 25 years or so, and this show is my favourite discovery! At first I was expecting it to be all about a) proving that ghosts are real or b) fighting/exorcising/getting rid of ghosts, but it isn't interested in either of those things. Amy and Adam are surprisingly empathetic towards the ghosts, which I really enjoy. I find the show's formula ("family is scared --> Amy and Adam talk to the ghost --> Amy and Adam research the house/neighbourhood --> talk to the ghost some more and find out that it isn't trying to hurt anybody --> family is reassured") very comforting.

Monster Factory:

Two brothers make the worst/ugliest/strangest characters they can in various video games and then teach themselves (and us) to love those characters through equally strange gameplay. An absurdist masterpiece. In my letter last year I said that Monster Factory had been helping me get through some pretty bad depressive episodes; that's still true this year. I love this show and I love these boys. I'd be happy with pretty much any direction you would like to take for this prompt, but I'd especially like a Final Pam vid. I maintain that the Final Pam episodes are high art.
