Favourite Writer

So there was this woman, right? And she was a hairdresser, and she had an online column of (really, really hilarious and occasionally twisted) comics parodies, and a website complaining about how female characters in comics are more like plot devices than people. And this woman was very clever and very funny, and after a while of being clever and funny about comics she started to get jobs being clever and funny in them.

Now, she writes Secret Six and Birds of Prey, two of my absolute favourite comics ever. She continues to be clever and funny and occasionally twisted, and to care about all her characters. She's probably the only comics writer I have absolute faith in-- the one time this faith wavered was back in BoP v.1 #98, where it looked like Cass had been discounted in favour of a new whiter Batgirl who may have been Babs in the suit again. (Sound familiar? This was years ago she wrote that story.) I was pretty upset about this story! It was one of the first times I got linked on WFA, I'm pretty sure. And Gail found that post and told me to wait and see. And you know what that storyline was? It was introducing Misfit. The girl who's been my default icon since approximately forever. (This is, for the record, why I was one of the few people not ready to kill her over BoP 2.2 last month.)

Since I started reading superhero comics, Gail has come to Toronto a few times. One of them was at a show I was working at, and Nicola Scott was there also, and they did a BoP panel-- and I worked through it. But this year, finally, finally, I got to see her. She was the nicest creator I've ever met. It was slightly surreal, actually. I was dressed as Misfit, so instead of me taking my picture with one of my heroes, she took a picture with me. And I gave her a Ragdoll bracelet and she told twitter I was adorable and, hi, this was months ago and I am still not over it.

This is the woman who invented Scandal, and Jeannette, and Misfit, and Ryan Choi, and Savant, and Black Alice, and the current Ragdoll, and Wonder Woman's White Ape Roomies. The woman who made me love Huntress, and Deadshot, and Lady Blackhawk, and Catman, and even Bane. I just. Gail Simone is one of my absolute favourite people. If I were a writer (or, I suppose, a hairdresser?) I would aspire to be one half as good as she is.
