"Explores the long history of the figure of the vampire in film and television in order to understand its significance in cinematic history and the culture at large. At least since FW Murnau’s Nosferatu (1922), the vampire has been a staple character, first in horror, and then in modified forms of drama, comedy, and art cinema. The course will range from the vampire’s mythic and literary roots (Vlad the Impaler; Bram Stoker’s Dracula, J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s In a Glass Darkly) to popular culture phenomena like Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003), Twilight (2008), and True Blood (2008-09). In examining the history of this character, the course will examine the vampire’s sustained cultural resonance, especially in relation to explorations of forbidden sexuality, and its affinity for cinematic play with time, space, and imagination. Students will learn to examine the visual, aural, and narrative formal elements of films and television programs, relating form to literary and historical contexts as they explore the cultural meanings at play in the texts. Students will develop their writing and rhetorical skills by writing essays and performing formal and contextual analysis of films and other texts. Open to non-majors."

It’s a night class at Keele campus, and that’s four hours twice a week for a month, so I know I will probably regret this decision later on but right now it just seems hilarious and amazing. (I'm also taking a half-credit French class, but that's less exciting.)
